Long Neck, Delaware is a water-oriented, resort community situated between the beautiful Rehoboth Bay and the Indian River Bay and located near the popular Mid-Atlantic resort beach areas of Rehoboth Beach ("The Nation's Summer Capital"), Dewey Beach and Lewes, Delaware. A thriving part of Sussex County, Long Neck is home to several seaside communities considered to be prime summer vacation spots because of their proximity to the water. True to its namesake, Long Neck is located on a small peninsula of land that stretches East and enjoys quick and easy access to the Indian River Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean.
With an approximate total area of 2.5 square miles, Long Neck offers several scenic ponds, beautiful saltwater marshes, bayside beaches, woods and natural refuge areas and is blessed with an abundance of natural vegetation and wildlife including deer, foxes, ducks, geese, heron, osprey, wild turkeys, eagles, quail and horseshoe crabs. Well known for its water recreation, the bays around Long Neck offer great fun and sport: fishing, crabbing, clamming, boating, sailing, jet-skiing, kitesurfing, kayaking, paddleboarding and birdwatching.
Long Neck is also home to the exclusively public 18-hole championship golf course of Baywood Greens and the private Jack Nicklaus signature golf course — The Peninsula Golf & Country Club. The area also offers a large marine center (Short's Marine), health care facilities, plenty of produce stands, a few shopping centers (with Harris Teeter, Giant and Food Lion grocery stores) and a variety of dining establishments. Some popular restaurants in the area include Paradise Grille, Paradise Pub, Taste Garden, Plaza Mexico, Yellowfins, Brick Works Brewing & Eats, Serendipity and Two Meatballs.
Long Neck is just a short drive from the Delaware beaches and a quick boat ride to the Indian River Inlet, Dewey Beach and Ocean View. At the end of Long Neck Road lies Massey's Landing Boat Ramp — a public boat ramp with docks, a fishing pier and kayak launches with easy boat access to the Indian River Inlet. Within an easy drive from Long Neck, you'll also find outlet shopping, retail boutiques, the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, Lewes beaches, 3 hospitals, colleges, senior centers, art leagues, an equestrian center, campgrounds, small-town museums and more. It is approximately a 2 to 2.5 hour drive from Annapolis, Baltimore, District of Columbia and Philadelphia.
Special annual events in the area include "Long Neck-style" events for Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day, plus Paradise Bay Tournament ("Worlds Largest Bay Tournament") held in July and Flounder Pounder Open ("World's Largest Flounder Tournament") held in August. Rich in Native American Indian heritage, Long Neck is located near a historic Indian cultural center — "The Nanticoke Indian Museum" — where The Nanticoke Indian Tribe PowWow is held annually in September.
